Why choose a goldendoodle?

Health

It didn't take long to see the special qualities of these hybrid dogs.  There is a genetic advantage of crossbreeding purebred dogs.  Combining two breeds from unrelated gene pools results in what breeders refer to as "Hybrid Vigor".  Hybrid Vigor decreases the incidence of genetic defects and increases traits like fertility, survival and growth rate.  Therefore goldendoodles, bred from healthy parents, are very healthy in general.

Temperament

Goldendoodles are the result or blending the finest genetically healthy strains of the Poodle and the finest healthy strains of the Golden Retriever, which is renown for its reliable family friendly temperament.  The Golden Retriever makes a great hunter, family pet or show dog.  They are used successfully in field trials, obedient and used as guide dogs.  So, goldendoodles are very loving dogs who want to please and are wonderful dogs, well suited especially for children.

Coat

Many people are allergic to pet hair and dander and therefore have chosen not to have a dog of their choice like the loving family friendly Golden Retriever because of shedding.  However because of the blend of the Golden Retriever with the non-shedding Poodle these people can have the best of both breeds; great temperament and a little to non-shedding coat.

Training

Training our doodles is also an enjoyable job.  They are so intelligent and compliant and do very well whether you train them yourself or put them in a puppy training class.  We have had many positive comments about training from owners of our goldendoodles.

Goldendoodles vs. Labradoodles

We are asked all the time what the difference is between a labradoodle and goldendoodle.  We have had and bred both for 8 years and as far as health, temperament, coat and training are concerned, we have not observed a significant difference in these qualities between the two.  Some goldendoodle breeders have reported that the coats of goldendoodles beyond F1 start to break down but we have not observed that in our puppies.  We have bred goldendoodle puppies beyond F1 with beautiful coats.

There are three types of Goldendoodles being bred: F1, F1B and multi-generation.

1. F1 - Cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever.  Depending on the breeder, first cross Goldendoodle coats will vary from wispy to a thick wave.  Goldendoodle first cross coats tend to be consistently wavier than Labradoodle first cross coats.  There can be shedding but there are usually some that do not shed.  Goldendoodles have a wonderful, loving temperament and good health if the parent dogs are the same.

2. F1B - Cross between an F1 Goldendoodle and a Poodle.  These backcrossed Goldendoodles have beautiful little to non-shedding fleece coats, dander free.  Their temperaments are almost always great if the parent dog temperaments are the same.

3. Multi-generation -  Cross between an F2 Goldendoodle and a Poodle.  These goldendoodles have beautiful little to non-shedding fleece coats, dander free and have wonderful temperaments.

We were at a doodle romp where there were approximately 20 doodles running around without leashes.  They were all playing together and not one barked.  The doodles we have are very mellow and compliant.  That works very well in our household where we homeschool four children.
